After all the hype surrounding the missing case of Gauri Bhonsle, Khamoshiyan- the Star Plus 7:30 starer turned out to be the story of a girl in search of her roots and family in India, while she is based in London with her Parents.
Post a dream engagement with her friend turned fiance Siddharth (Mohit Sehgal), Gauri(Mrunal Thakur) is extremely disappointed when she learns none of her cousins or relatives will turn up at her wedding. The feeling gets worse each time she see's her fiance flocked by cousins who readily humiliate her for her dressing and her non-existent family!
The scenes between Siddharth and Gauri so far look very cliche, and I wonder if establishing their love story in the very first week was a good idea at all. The story for now clearly seems to be focused on Gauri aching to know more about her family while her mother and father have built her hopes and dreams on a pack of cards.
Gauri will not take no for an answer and wants to know why her parents kept her in the dark all this while. As all of this happens elsewhere in India, Appa Saheb (Ravindra Lakshman Mankani) is introduced in a king size Mansion as a ruthless Politician with sufficient clout. In one of the flashbacks, he is seen ordering Gauri's parents Ashwani (Shruti Ulfat) and Pratap Bhonsle (Kabir Sadanand) to take a little kid away and move abroad.
While Gauri seems more than lost and forlorn everywhere she goes, understanding her turmoil, Siddharth decides to send her to India much to her joy and relief, so that she can find her answers.
The feel of London is hardly appealing, and the good looking actors could have easily been put to better use. Considering Mohit Sehgal comes with a huge set of fans from his previous youth drama Miley Jab Hum Tum, they might be disappointed at the fact that he was barely seen or used in the very first week.
The younger audience generally prefers to watch the growing and molding of a love story and hence, it is to be seen how the story will take shape going forward. People tend to relate to the struggle before the catch, which more often than not makes a love story appealing. Here the cards have been laid out in the open a little too soon.
The scene at the airport between Gauri and Siddharth gives a sense of dejavu where a regular TV buff or a candyfloss movie watcher would instantly say, Gauri while finding answers in India may also rediscover love, giving Siddharth a raw deal in the process.
Going by the title of the show, which was kept under-wraps throughout the promotion campaign on Starplus, the show that was eventually unveiled did come as a surprise! Good or Bad is what we leave for the audience to decide!
But the good thing about TV soaps in India is that you can never judge a show in its first week. There is always a room for new twists and turns, there are chances of a total change in the way the storyline in treated going forward. For starters however, the show fails to impress one, leaving you in doubt if you want to return in the coming week!
Sasural Genda Phool that went off air in April this year on a high note had a vast fan following, but Ek Doosre se karte hai pyaar hum that replaced it sadly failed to catch the attention of the viewers. It could have been due to the radical shift in the genre over night from a feel good show to a Gujrati drama. Khamoshiyan once again is a totally different genre.
The audience that may have slowly been warming up to a buffer show between hits like Saath Nibhaana Saathiya and Iss Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Doon, may give it a chance, but there is a definitely a need for the story line and the treatment of the episodes to get better failing which the audience will not think twice before using their remote to find a replacement in the same slot on a another Channel.
We give two smilies to this new Star Plus Venture.
